BoneMRI is image-processing software that turns a dedicated MRI scan into CT-like images of bone, so that radiologists and orthopaedic surgeons can assess bone shape without the X-ray dose of a CT scan. The instructions for use cover the spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar and S1) and the pelvic region in patients aged 12 and older, to assist diagnosis, monitoring and treatment planning of orthopaedic conditions; it also produces synthetic T1-weighted images. The vendor says a pre-trained encoder-decoder neural network, trained against CT scans of the same patients, reconstructs Hounsfield-unit values voxel by voxel; it does not learn from the hospital's data and does not report or diagnose. The imaging expert checks image quality and reads the BoneMRI images with the full MRI exam, never on their own. A gateway in the hospital pseudonymises the MRI data and sends it to a cloud service run by MRIguidance, which returns the images to the PACS as an extra series; the vendor names no cloud provider or region.
