DHI MUSE
by DHI
MUSE is DHI's multi-sensor bird and bat detection system that combines radar, robotic cameras and acoustic sensors with AI species recognition. At the Ecowende offshore wind farm (Hollandse Kust West VI, 53 km off IJmuiden), four Robin Radar MAX 3D radars track every object above the water and feed robotic cameras that zoom in and identify the species automatically. When a bird of interest gets too close to the rotor, the system triggers sound deterrents and, if that fails, can stop the turbine automatically; live species recognition is being tested and implemented on 20 turbines on the north side of the farm. DHI collected thermal-camera footage in 2024 to train MUSE to tell bats from small birds at night. Ecowende is a joint venture of Shell (60%), Chubu (30%) and Eneco (10%); the farm delivered first power in July 2026 and is operated by Eneco Wind Offshore Operations. The detections also feed Ecowende's bird and bat monitoring and research programme.
