ExR-2 inspection robot
by ExRobotics
ExR-2 is an ATEX Zone 1 certified ground robot that drives pre-defined routes through hazardous process areas and records visual, thermal, vibration and gas readings at set inspection points. ExRobotics developed it with Shell Pernis and Dow Terneuzen, after working with both sites from 2020 to April 2022 to learn how robots could take over operator inspection rounds. Raw robot data is converted by algorithms the vendor describes as artificial intelligence into information; Shell's labour study found 47 algorithms are needed to simulate one operator round. Discrepancies are flagged and sent to the control room, where operators decide on follow-up, and an optional emissions detector sends gas-leak locations to the control room. The ExR-2 can operate completely autonomously without remote control.
