TenneT Sparky substation inspection robot
by TenneT
TenneT uses a robot dog at its Wateringen high-voltage substation for autonomous inspection rounds: a 3D model of the station was uploaded to 'Sparky', which carries out 37 inspection missions on its own, from visual checks of meters and disconnectors to the perimeter fence. In a June 2024 interview TenneT said it was looking at extending this to its 350 substations in the Netherlands, alongside camera drones for checking rust, cracks and paint on some of its 13,298 pylons (270 in 2024) and IoT sensors for near-real-time asset monitoring. Inspectors review the findings. The interview does not name the robot's manufacturer or say whether image analysis uses AI.
