TORTUS
by TORTUS
TORTUS is an autonomous ambient voice technology (AVT) and AI clinical documentation platform for the UK NHS. It uses speaker-diarised audio capture (encrypted locally on device) during clinician-patient consultations to automatically draft structured clinical notes, letters, referrals, and clinical codes, which are filed into the electronic patient record (EPR) after clinician approval. Intended users are clinicians across NHS GP practices, hospitals (emergency department, outpatients), mental health, ambulance clinical hubs, and other clinical settings. Evidenced use cases include ambient note/letter/referral generation across 50+ clinical settings, integration with major NHS EPR systems and X-On and Avaya telephony services, and productivity outcomes such as 13.4% A&E productivity increase (NHS England Phase IV evaluation), 23.5% more direct patient-care time, and 5 minutes saved per outpatient encounter. The platform includes The Shell, a proprietary clinical safety system that detects and removes statements unsupported by the consultation (92.7% major hallucination reduction per peer-reviewed npj Digital Medicine research). TORTUS is registered in England and Wales and is described as the first AVT certified as a UKCA Class IIa medical device.
