Chatbox AI is a multi-model chat client that works with the user's own API keys (GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and others) or with Chatbox's hosted model service. It offers file and image Q&A, live web search, a desktop-only local knowledge base, image generation, MCP tool connections, and 'Work Mode', where the site says an agent can work with files, search the web, write code, use tools and take action autonomously. Chat history is stored on the user's device. Two data paths matter: in bring-your-own-key use, content goes to whichever provider the user configures, and the vendor says it cannot guarantee privacy or security there; in hosted use, content passes through Chatbox's servers, may be temporarily stored, and is stated not to be used for advertising or model training. Rated medium on limited and partly contradictory evidence. The rating would move to high for deployments that use the hosted service or Work Mode with MCP tools on devices holding confidential data, because the operating entity's identity and jurisdiction could not be confirmed (Mediocre, LLC, Mediocre Company/Jike HK Limited and Mediocre Apps all appear), the upstream model providers of the hosted service are not named, the Privacy Policy and Terms date from 2023-08-29 and predate the agent features, and no DPA, security attestation or trust center was found. Vendor-stated data handling differs slightly between the Privacy Policy (not stored after the response) and the Help Center FAQ (may be temporarily stored).
