Guardian is Alliander's in-house AI-powered platform that detects partial discharges in the data gathered by Smart Cable Guard (SCG), an online sensor system on medium-voltage cables and joints. Partial discharges precede cable and joint failures, and SCG localises them along the circuit; when a short circuit occurs it pinpoints the fault location. Guardian turns the measurements into early warning signals that skilled operators judge before deciding on action, such as preventively replacing a cable joint. Alliander has rolled out 2,300 sensor systems covering 15% of its most critical MV connections, and reports more than 250 outages prevented over five years and a MV SAIDI reduction of about 2 minutes per customer. SCG is integrated into Alliander's outage management system, cutting recovery time by 20% in monitored grids. Alliander plans to use SCG data for real-time cable temperature estimates and asset-specific failure insights.
