iThenticate
by Turnitin
iThenticate is Turnitin's similarity checker for research manuscripts, grant proposals and other high-stakes documents. Publishers, researchers, research institutions, grant makers and admissions offices use it to compare documents against scholarly content (including Crossref member content), web pages and private repositories before publication or review. The vendor says a paid AI writing detection add-on uses Turnitin's in-house text classifier to show the share of a document likely generated by AI tools such as ChatGPT, including English text altered by paraphrasing or bypasser tools, and that NLP sorts similarity matches by whether they were cited or quoted. Turnitin says the AI score can misidentify human-written text, is not shown for results between 1 and 19%, and should not be the sole basis for adverse action, which needs human judgement under the organisation's own policies.
