Art is the name Epic uses for the generative AI built into its electronic health record for hospital doctors, nurses and other clinicians. The vendor says Art drafts possible replies to patient portal messages (Message Drafting, earlier called In Basket draft replies), writes short summaries of a patient's history, recent developments and notes for visit preparation and admitted patients (Insights), answers natural-language questions about a chart with citations, and, through AI Charting, listens during a visit, drafts the note and queues orders. Epic describes ambient drafts as notes 'for the clinician to review and sign'. Hospitals using message drafting describe a doctor or nurse checking and editing every draft before it is sent. The features run inside the Epic record, not as a separate application. Epic names GPT-4 as an example of the language models in its pipeline but does not publish where models run for European customers.
