ARTIMES
door NKI-AVL
ARTIMES is an AI model built by the Netherlands Cancer Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (NKI-AVL) to judge how pleural mesothelioma, a cancer that grows as a thin, irregular layer along the lung wall, responds to treatment. Pulmonologists at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek use it on CT scans of patients already diagnosed with the disease. NKI-AVL says the model measures the whole tumour volume and compares it with earlier scans, instead of the diameter measurements doctors relied on; the published research version is a deep-learning segmentation model trained on annotated CT scans and tested against data from eight clinical trials. NKI-AVL says a doctor always checks the model's measurements, and it wrote guidelines to support doctors in using it; trade press adds that responsibility for treatment decisions stays with the doctor. NKI-AVL says that under current EU rules only its own doctors may use the model, because it was developed there. A research release is public on Hugging Face and is labelled not a medical device. Where clinical processing runs is not stated.
