AI Application
Low Confidence

Proctorio is online proctoring software that runs as a browser extension and integrates with an institution's LMS or assessment platform. Universities, schools, employers and certification bodies use it to lock down the test environment, verify a test-taker's identity and record webcam, screen, audio and web traffic during online exams. The vendor says automated monitoring flags behaviour chosen by the exam administrator, using facial detection and gaze detection on the webcam video, tracked head movement, sound detection, question response time and the applications running on the device, and that an optional Continuity Check compares the person on camera with the one who started the exam on the device. Its Origin products add a Behavior Tracker that tells human from AI-agent activity and AuthorProof, which can generate comprehension quizzes from a student's own submission. Proctorio says it does not make integrity decisions: reviewers at the institution see a summary of flagged events and decide whether any action is warranted.

Proctorio states that its face detection can fail to pick up a test-taker (for example because of webcam angle, background or glare on glasses), after which a support agent can review webcam images and override the check, and that background noise can trigger a flag. It says flags are based on the settings the exam administrator chooses and that the institution's reviewers decide whether a flagged event was a breach of exam integrity.
